Definition[edit]

The bump limit is the maximum number of times a thread on an imageboard can be bumped to the top of the catalog by new replies. Once this limit is reached, additional posts no longer affect the thread’s position.

Purpose[edit]

  • Prevents a single discussion from monopolizing the front page.
  • Encourages the creation of fresh threads and content.
  • Helps manage server load by naturally phasing out older discussions.

Typical Values[edit]

Board Limit Notes
/a/ 300 Standard limit on most 4chan boards.
/b/ 500 Higher limit due to board volume.
/jp/ 250 Slightly lower to maintain faster turnover.

After Reaching the Limit[edit]

Once the bump limit is hit, the thread enters Autosage, meaning it will no longer rise in the catalog but remains open for replies until it is pruned.
