Autosage
From Bibliotheca Anonoma
Definition[edit]
Autosage (also written "auto‑sage" or "autosaged") is a state in which a thread stops bumping to the top of an imageboard’s catalog when new replies are posted. The thread remains open for discussion, but its visibility gradually declines as newer threads appear.
Common Triggers[edit]
- Bump limit reached – Most boards impose a fixed number of bumps (e.g., 300) before autosage begins.
- Moderator action – Staff can manually place a thread into autosage to reduce visibility without deleting it.
- Time decay – Some software automatically autosages threads after a set age, regardless of bump count.
Indicators[edit]
- The reply counter continues to increase, but the thread’s position in the catalog does not change.
- On 4chan, the "bump" arrow disappears once autosage is active.
Purpose[edit]
Autosage helps manage board clutter by allowing discussions to wind down naturally while preventing old threads from monopolizing the front page. It also provides a softer moderation tool than outright deletion.
