Greentext (format)

From Bibliotheca Anonoma

Definition[edit]

Greentext is a posting style on imageboards where each line begins with the ">" character, causing the text to appear green in most board stylesheets. It is commonly used for quoting, storytelling, and conveying sarcasm.

Features[edit]

  • Lines start with the greater‑than symbol (>).
  • Rendered in green (#789922) on 4chan and many clones.
  • Often formatted as short, telegraphic sentences (">be me").

History[edit]

The convention traces back to Usenet quoting, but it became distinct on Futaba Channel and was popularized globally by 4chan in the mid‑2000s. Over time, "greentext stories" evolved into a recognizable meme format.

Example[edit]

>be me
>open fridge
>no tendies
>close fridge
>cry
