Origins in Japan[edit]

Imageboards originated in Japan in 1997 as experimental variations of the open bulletin board format. Imageboards remain a niche website until 2chan implements them in 2001. Within a few years some of the world's largest communities.

Western Adoption[edit]

In 2003, 4chan adapted the concept for English-speaking audiences, inspiring numerous spin-offs and niche communities.
