An imageboard is floating thread BBS, an online discussion platform where users post images accompanied by text comments. Threads are typically ephemeral, with older posts being pruned as new content appears.

History
Origins in Japan
Imageboards originated in Japan in 1997 as experimental variations of the open bulletin board format. Imageboards remain a niche website until 2chan implements them in 2001. Within a few years some of the world's largest communities.
Western Adoption
In 2003, 4chan adapted the concept for English-speaking audiences, inspiring numerous spin-offs and niche communities.
