Well, I'm your standard /a/non I guess. Not very social at all - though I do have the ability to hold my own in a conversation and such. Not much for relationships or anything of that sort though... back to that whole socially-inept bit.

Experience with children... Helped a lost kid find his Mom in a Walmart one time... That's about it.

taking care of another is absolutely NOT hard, i've been doing it for the past 10 years with my sisters and cousins. all you gotta do is make sure that she is nourished and have a comfortable place to sleep and shower. If you can do that much then you're pretty much set, you just gotta remind her to do her homework and not be out too late. Being 12 years old, she has enough common sense to know how to live. OP: i don't know the geography of the situation, but it may be that you are the one moving if you take her in, at least so she can stay at the same school with the same friends. it does not sound like you have very deep roots, and if you do take her in, you want to try and minimize the additional disruption to her life. i think you should do it, but this is something to be aware of.

However, she won't start out that way unless her mom was already doing something very wrong. That will only come after years of neglect from OP.

The chances of the system allowing this is slim. For some reason they don't like when children go to anybody other than direct relatives. Often cousins/distant relatives aren't even considered and some children are just stuck in the system.
