Imageboards originated in Japan in the late 1990s, with sites such as 2channel and Futaba Channel (2chan) pioneering the format.
Western Adoption[edit]
In 2003, 4chan adapted the concept for English-speaking audiences, inspiring numerous spin-offs and niche communities.
