What happened in Indonesians Internet as of now?[edit]
Short answer, mostly social media lol
Long answer, Indonesia has this influx of big-fish social media users (I talk about Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube). They mostly do what normal people (you can call it normies) do on those sites - daily life, posts (and reposts) of funny pictures and videos they got in family whatsapp group, etc. Usually, what they talk about in Internet, is what they would talk about in real life. Most adult exist in Instagram since it has all of their "daily internet necessity" - make a post, see other people's posts, messaging, etc. Facebook now exists as "relic of past" and populated by old people and those who just got touched by Internet in late 2015 (coincidentally when most of Indonesia adopted smartphone as their additional means to communicate). Twitter is useful to track real-time events, even though it's usually drama-tweets anyway..
Indonesian Internet would not be complete if we don't talk about 'gamers'. Bing-bing wahoo knows no limit in gender and age, everyone can come and play. Then enters the"get rich quick by becoming a professional gamer" scheme, it's not something that really promoted by local pro gamers themselves but the prospect of "get rich while playing games" is too enticing to most of Indonesians.
It would be boring if it stopped here, ain't it? Since one of main "ingredient" of Internet is these "fringe" internet users - weeaboos, scene kids, etc. They do exist on social media I listed above but they have the knowledge about "fringe" websites e.g tumblr, reddit, 4chan, *chan, etc. NOTE: I called tumblr and reddit as part of fringe internet since many Indonesians (and by Indonesian I talk about whole Indonesia, not only people in Java) don't know abot the existence about those sites. Most Indonesian populate r/indonesia and Indonesian Vtuber threads in /vt/, in some ocasions, an all-Indonesian thread would appear in /int/.
When Internet Entered Indonesia[edit]
In Indonesia, internet was starting to get recognition in the early 90s. It was called "Paguyuban Network" - . Based on the list from whois ARIN dan APNIC, first Indonesian Internet protocol, UI-NETLAB (192.41.206/24) was attributed to Universitas Indonesia at June, 24th 1988. Since then, "warung internet" or internet cafe begun to grow as Internet users start to grow as well.

I feel it's an important matter to talk about the "cultural time dilation" that happened here. In short, since Jakarta (and most of Java) has experienced faster infrastructure development, they can taste the benefits that come with it - easy access to foreign culture, ability to keep updated with latest trends, etc. This also reflects in the Internet counterpart, where they can enjoy the exposure of the Internet to them.
Warung Internet (The hell is that anyway?)[edit]
Adoption of home connection (router+wifi) only began in 2010. Dial-up internet was expensive and most people would spent money to buy latest gaming console and handheld rather than personal computer in early 2000s. So, how do Indonesian even use Internet? People were flocked to warung internet to do their stuff
Warung Internet, abbreviated as "warnet", is what "Internet cafe" to Indonesian. Not just for internet, the owner of this warnet usually server foods and beverage as well, mostly Indomie and soft drinks
Before Facebook, where were Indonesians hang out before (in Internet)[edit]
Early 2000s people, who enjoying their time in warung internet, will mostly found chatting in mIRC and chatting with people around Indonesia, or even internationally. Around 2005-2007, Indonesians spent their time in Friendster, much like MySpace but you cannot post your music there.
Bored with their Playstation, people also playing online games. The prominent were Ragnarok Online and CS 1.6. The aforementioned warnet were full of those gamers who play for fun or even competitively. It then followed by DotA All-Star and other online games e.g SEAL Online, Lineage, GetAmped, etc.
