Minecraft was publicly released by Markus Persson (aka Notch) on May 17th 2009 on the Tigsource forum. Notch also advertised Minecraft on multiple other different forums and websites, spreading the word, which eventually caused Minecraft to become the best selling video game of all time.

Shortly after Minecraft was shown on Tigsource, Notch went to /v/ on 4chan to share his game. This original thread is now lost but it was probably made shortly on or after May 17th 2009, /v/ had a big hand in Minecraft's popularity and the anons on /v/ were responsible for suggesting a lot of the features that are still in Minecraft today.
