Repository of primary sources and timeline of events for the 4chan board /qa/. Ideally, all statements should be backed by citations and kept as concise as possible.

Timeline

Prior Brackground

A short retread on the events that led directly to moot resigning as admin and indirectly to the creation of /qa/.

• 2014-08-28 - Gamergate - The ongoing Zoe Quinn cancellation drama takes an unexpected turn as nearly all independent video games news pages publish variations of "Gamers are Dead" on the same day. What was previously a controversial lolcow watch becomes a civil war within the gaming community. On /v/, the affably received quinnspiracy threads, now coalescing into the Gamergate general become the single most active threads on the site, burning through the bump limit in hours as refugees from NeoGAF, r/games and many more forums rush to the only forum that allows discussion on the topic.
• 2014-08-31 - The Fappening - A guy on /b/ leaks several hundred celebrity nudes hacked off of iCloud. TMZ offers him over a million dollars for the rest (which he declined), and continues to post pictures and videos throughout the day. A thread on /b/ made by him has bump and image limits disabled until it reaches over 9,000 replies (Reached 10,111 replies) in a non-stickied thread, causing the entire site to lag. The event is dubbed both by 4channers and the media "The Fappening".

• 2014-09-04 - 4chan implements a series of major policy changes, now including a DMCA takedown service. Possibly due to threats of legal action by Jennifer Lawrence due to The Fappening incident. This takedown service operates through a MD5 hash blacklist. The most public pictures of Jennifer Lawrence are the first MD5s confirmed banned. It's most likely the legal threats did not end there, as Martin Singer would soon threaten Google itself.
• 2014-09-15 - An unfortunate anon makes a terrible first post on the Gamergate general and anons start demanding people report non-helpful posts. At this point, the thread was moving so fast such actions saturated the report queue, an enormous problem for a moderation that is dealing with the fallout of The Fappening and another headache for an Administration that could find itself in court soon.
• 2014-09-16 - Exile of Gamergate - A mod posts on the Gamergate general declaring the topic banned because it's clogging the report queue. Every new GamerGate thread gets deleted and users riot and accuse this mod of going rogue. In the wake of the crackdown, 4chan's "feedback" page is also removed from the website, moot's e-mail address disappears from all contact pages, and Germany allegedly gets a mass IP range ban (this was then discovered to be just a rumour with no basis, due to several German flags appearing on /int/). The outrage that ensued is on a scale unseen since the /b/day of legend, making /v/ unusable for several days, having ripples in several boards, most notably /b/ and /pol/, the latter seeing it as a "gotcha" moment for their anti-moot narrative. This crescendo peaks in the * 2014-09-18 - Sticky on /v/. moot declares GamerGate officially banned from the whole site because of Global Rule 4 (no doxxing). "Said threads are being deleted primarily because they violate our blanket "no personal information / raids / calls to invasion" rule. Spamming the reports system and creating multiple topics were also a factor, especially given /v/ is one of 4chan's fastest moving boards and has historically struggled with keeping topics limited to actual video games." It's later discovered that modposting was disabled by order of moot. Following the crackdown, a vast amount of complaining stirs up on /b/, with a good portion of threads speaking out against 4chan moderation and administration. Many of said threads say that users should simply leave on October 1st (4chan's 11th anniversary) and only return when (and if) moderation of 4chan returns to its original relaxed state. A 4chan clone, 8chan, gets popular for discussing Gamergate threads. Linking to it results in an auto-ban.
• September 19 - moots the Luggage Lad - For the first time, moot suffers leaks his personal life. /pol/ discover the Instagram account of moot's fellow NYC acquaintance Mallory Blair, which is completely public and happily blogging that she went to Europe with him around July. It's soon discovered that, Blair together with moderator Swaglord had ties to NYC news media, particularly Gawker. Many assume moot finally got a gf, others that he is a simp. One of her social media posts however has unfortunate friendzoning vibes with the line "he carries luggage & is single ladies", sparking a meme. With /pol/ in full rebellion and a /v/ still reeling from Gamergate, anons eat this up and spread it everywhere claiming 4chan sold the site to SJW over a woman. The leaks were likely motivated by Gawker's involvement in Gamergate (via Kotaku), and while initially taken in stride by all involved, may have directly affected moot's personal social life.
• September 22 - moot makes a shitposty /sp/ sticky about going to see the Bears. A picture of Blair's actual boyfriend is posted and /pol/ implodes as soon as they see it. Everything related to moot gets flooded to hell and back with cuck spam.
• 2014-10-07 - The /pol/ocaust, AKA /pol/ Harbor - After months of harassment over personal photos, moot goes nuts and transforms /pol/ into a shitpost board - It starts with the addition of multiple wordfilters, e.g. "moot" becomes "the CEO of Troll, Inc.", and "cuck" becomes "cluck". More word filters are added as the day progresses. 4chan temporarily goes down for maintenance, and comes back a few hours later. Several threads are stickied - the first is a locked "FOR FREE" thread mocking janitors, and the second is a picture of moot getting fucked by Anita and Zoe. Captcha and flags are removed, and moot adds a global announcement urging people to go and test /pol/'s new captcha-less posting. Another sticky is added, this time saying "POST YFW THE CAPTCHA IS GONE". The post timer is later reduced to 15 seconds, and the global announcement is edited to say "Now with legacy timers!". The timer for creating threads is reduced to 1 minute. All posts are turned into dubs by adding an extra digit identical to the last digit at the end of the post number, which causes chaos as people are unable to link to previous posts. At the request of an Anon on [s4s], moderator swaglord stickies a thread that repeats the phrase "wew lad" over and over. Furry porn, guro, loli and ponies are posted with little retaliation from the mods, although some threads are deleted. The board goes apeshit as the users try to flee to /mlp/, /int/, [s4s], and other boards to no avail. After a couple of hours the "wew lad" and "POST YFW THE CAPTCHA IS GONE" stickies are removed, but the cuck sticky and janitor sticky remain. The audio from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPM6LKIaopk is embedded into the front page and the board is renamed The 8 Steps of Cuckolding with subtitle >she does it for fun. A feature is added which makes every post be preceded by "[trigger warning]", which is given a marquee animation soon after. The fortune function is added, and is later changed to say "Your privilege:" instead of "your fortune:" and "Cuck" instead of "Luck". People had been typing "mo“ot ## Ad“min ⌘" in the subject field to impersonate moot, so the subject field is renamed "mo“ot ## Ad“min ⌘" as a joke. Two threads are stickied; one is unicode art of an anime girl, the other is a sticky request. They are both locked and unstickied later on. Many believe these happenings mean moot is going to delete /pol/. Antisemitic cartoonist Ben Garrison made a cartoon threatening moot prior to this happening, which referred to moot as "the CEO of Troll, Inc." (which is what the word filter is referencing). The cartoon was deleted shortly after.
• 2015-01-17 - #janiteam leaks - Clearly coached by a lawyer, moot rolls out in-depth internal policy changes for team4chan. Including sweeping changes to janitor application wording, the definition of Janitor, and the added requirements that janitors are now required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement and present a real ID (with no proper solution for international janitors). At 13:00 EST he breaks the news to #janiteam, where a palpably jaded moot to confirms the change applies to all current team4chan members, not just new ones. This is immediately protested, even by old guard mods, with janitor Cephei getting told to just resign. Within hours another janitor, andonuts, leaks his entire logs of the #janiteam IRC on 8chan's IRC, both hosted on Rizon, prompting Brennan to visit team4chan to gloat. Soon after the full IRC leaks dating back to 2012 are released. moot later makes the news official with a 4chan Blog post titled "New requirement for 4chan volunteers going forward". Brennan then adds fuel to the fire by making his own sticky thread on 8chan's /b/ and leaking the entire logs to the public. The next day andonuts creates a board on 8chan: /forfree/ - Journal of Janny, where he rants on various topics regarding moderation and leaks screenshots. He "confirms" his identity by linking to pics hosted on the secret janitor board, /j/. This is by far and wide the largest leak of internal practices 4chan ever had, leading to multiple hundred threads of Anons trying to find who "their" janitor was and confirm every single bias they ever had. Janitors on rizon are privately contacted and dozens of chat snippets would become the basis for years-long conspiracy theories. Above all, the leaks portray a moot that shows signs of severe burn out, addressing janitors passive-aggressively and making dismissive remarks about 4chan, stating he only made the Otakon anniversary convention to meet old acquaintances and didn't give a care about common anons.
• 2015-01-21 - End of an Era - Causing what will be remembered as the biggest shitstorm to ever flood 4chan, at 11:00 AM EST moot officially announces his retirement from the role of 4chan's acting administrator. "[...] as today I'm retiring as 4chan's administrator. From a user's perspective, nothing should change. A few senior volunteers—including 4chan's lead developer, managing moderator, and server administrator—have stepped up to ensure a smooth transition over the coming weeks." On layman terms, the entire site flips the fuck out.
  • Here's to you, Nicola and Bart is embedded on /b/, Futurama's Goodbye Seymour... Will Wait For You is embedded on /co/, and a poor ocarina rendition of Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On is embedded on [s4s].
  • /a/ gets renamed to "It /a/ll returns to nothing.", subtitled "tumbling down", with Komm, Susser Tod embedded. moot also posts in a thread on /a/ which gets 7403 replies and nearly 3000 uploaded images, with about 3600 of which are replying to his post, breaking the record for most replied post in /a/'s history. There was also a smaller thread which moot replied to that was stickied on /co/.
  • Several boards, including /a/, /v/, /g/, /int/ and /mlp/, and [s4s] make (or attempt at making) goodbye cards for moot. It's noteworthy to point out that /a/ tried to reach 10,000 signatures.

2015

• 2015-01-23 - moot's Farewell Stream
  • 00:30~ EST - /qa/ - Question & Answer is created. moot makes the first post at 00:50 EST; The board remains unannounced until midday.
  • 14:00 EST - /qa/ is announced. moot has a livestream session that lasts eight hours. Twelve stickies in /qa/ are maxed out. He ends the Q&A with a misquote from Cowboy Bebop: "See you later, space cowboy".
  • /qa/'s board-tan is designed
• 2015-01-24 - A Board-tan General is established, mostly inhabited by remnants of /co/'s 4chan House project & the recent /v/ Winter Ball event. Gratuitous shipping ensues.
• 2015-01-27
  • 14:00 EST - Posting on /qa/ is disabled. Assumed for moderation purposes due to being directly preceded by a brony avatarfag raid.
  • 16:30 EST - Posting on /qa/ is reenabled..

• 2015-09-23 - Winter Ball 2015 - /qa/ hosts the Board-tans Harvest Festival, by hand of the board tans general.
  • Anon suggests hosting the Winter Ball that /v/ celebrated last year. It grows into a beast of an event, burning through 25 threads on /qa/ plus even more threads site-wide, generating several hundred pics' worth of OC art. Albeit it's not without criticism and open rejection in some threads.
  • Hiroyuki says hi in another thread.
• 2015-09-25 - The first Test Thread is made. Baptized by a mod post.

• 2016-01-27 - /qa/ - Quests & Adventures - Heather Quest - /qa/ gets a quests hosted by drawfag remeranAuthor !.neWrem.g. aka remi.

• 2016-03-07 - First sighting of the asukaspammer

The explodes into a months long flamewar between several posters in and out of /qa/, and the appearance of new namefags and avatarfags.
• 2016-07-30 - A circlejerk hijack thread sees drawfag newrem get doxxed. Anons are outraged, shitflinging ensues and Lucas and Mark become a minor meme.
• 2016-07-31 - The first No. thread.
• 2016-08-06 - Catholic Anon gets a Reddit account.

• 2016-09-15 - Pikarifag goes to the #4chan IRC to ask ALTERNATIVE for help with the GR15 spam, he's rebuked and basically told /qa/ doesn't get moderation
• 2016-10-01 - 4chan's 13th birthday and a lot of changes. A thread about the since4chanpass feature that lets users show how old their pass is has Hiroyuki appear to defend the feature.
• 2016-10-02 - October Chaos - Old /qa/ ends here. Out of nowhere, Hiroyuki begins fearmongering that if 4chan doesn't make sweeping changes to monetization, the website is going to close down. He redirects discussion on the matter to /qa/, instantly putting the board on the map of all of 4chan and the extended chanverse. Within a week, /qa/ posting speed duplicates and the usual effortposting meta threads are hopelessly outposted by both off-topic shitposts and too many crossboard anons making demands to the site. Within months, several groups of shitposters and raiders make /qa/ their home, preventing the original board culture from ever returning.
• 2016-10-04 - /vip/ is created. Dozens of users flood /qa/ to comment / make fun of non-pass users.

  • Trump's victory in the US elections causes an explosion of /deletepol/ and /pol/ threads, time span between new threads in around 2 minutes, likely the fastest on /qa/'s history. Aftereffect ripples last for the remainder of the year.
  • Asukaspammer celebrates with crapflood N°6.
• 2016-11-09 - Dogs are swimming. Sticky'd!
• 2016-11-10 to 16 - Questions Raid - The breakneck speed of /qa/ creates generalized chaos as the board gets several hundred threads, most composed of single line questions or inane statements. Accusations of raids get thrown around, but it is likely a shitpost bandwagon.
• 2016-11-10 - Asukaspammer crapflood N° 7
• 2016-11-11 - Winter Ball 2016 - The third 4chan Board-tans event arrived late with no board acting as official hub. Yet it was not dead: Multiple dozen threads popped out site-wide around November 11 in a larger volume yet with reduced activity. Compared to 2015, most don't make bump limit except for a select few boards. Multiple small dates are carried out by crossboarding drawfags with the /qa/ board-tans general acting as impromptu hub. The event lasts around a month, without an official end date, activity winds down to trickle just a few days before Christmas. At least a hundred new illustrations made and a strange drama with a kid who tried to force a design update on /qa/-tan occurs.
• 2016-11-12 - Catholic Anon gets doxxed.
• 2016-11-13 - First hints of a new demographic, /jp/ spinoffers, can be seen.
• 2016-11-14 - Asukaspammer crapflood N° 8
• 2016-11-15 - Hiroyuki test thread, backend changes to hotlinking. Immediately before that, thumbnails were not loading

• 2016-12-12 - A /jp/ meta thread about the moving of /djt/ to the board, generals and off-site links counting as advertising has an unexpected appearance of Anonymous-San, without his mod handle
• 2016-12-17 - Firing of Anonymous-San - Anonymous makes a complaint demanding the unbanning of /pol/'s /diy/, a raid thread using fire safety regulations protocols to close down spaces. A later poster asks for elaboration on part of the mods, to which Anonymous-San, famous as modcat, replies in his old format of using the warning form.
• 2016-12-18 - The outraged poster posts his warning revealing the usage politically loaded language.
• 2016-12-19
  • 10:30 EST - Asan is unceremoniously and permanently relieved of his moderator duties after a verbal beatdown by RapeApe.
  • The news breaks over #4chan IRC provoking outrage from basically the entire /a/ & /jp/ webspheres and even within team4chan.
  • 10:39 EST RapeApe, under the ## Mod handle, posts a sticky on /qa/ explaining his reasoning.
• 2016-12-20
  • Asan later pops in on the thread with intent to burn bridges with team4chan's new management. He explains what happened in detail, revealing considerable information on 4chan's inner workings and rousing /qa/ into a riot.
• 2016-12-21 - Asukaspammer crapflood N° 12
• 2016-12-23 - Asukaspammer crapflood N° 13, shoe variant.
• 2016-12-28 - Remove (You) Incident - Remove (You) Anon had his day.
  • On a non-descript thread, anon manages to convince Hiro to disable (You)s, and on top of that, the Christmas hats.
  • The entire site immediately flips it's shit.
• 2016-12-29 - Within a single day, a new poll feature is added to the site. 4chan passes are required to prevent rigging. The first poll apart from a test is whether (You)s should be re-added.
• 2016-12-30 - After the majority of pass voters determined that the removal of (You)s was negative, (You)s are returned. Users speculate that Hiroyuki planned this from the start as a scheme to get people to buy passes.

2017

• 2017-01-09 - Asukaspammer crapflood N° 1X.
• 2017-01-14 - Birth of the Spinoff Clique - A /jp/-themed thread complaining about meta on /qa/ appears, inciting anons that arrived since october anons to start pushing off threads by spamming threads and redicted meta discussion elsewhere on the idea of potentially turning /qa/ into 2D/Random, much to the chagrin of established regulars. Signals the genesis of a clique that would basically destroy /qa/.
• 2017-01-15 - Earliest evidence of "/jp/" ghost bumping.
• 2017-01-21 - Icemen Raid - "Icemen", a fad of liberal activists organizing off-site start using /qa/ as a public platform for their activities. Icing consists on reporting technically rulebreaking threads on /pol/, such as raid threads, as GR1 violations, on the assumption they won't be punished for it. The goal is disrupting /pol/ Projects such as He Will Not Divide Us. Confused to be a single poster by mane later raiders.
• 2017-01-31
  • Anon on Happenings compiles ban histories from the ban.4tan archive, showing /pol/, /v/, /vg/, /tv/ & /a/ as the most moderated boards on the site.
  • Asukaspammer crapflood N° 1X.
  • Ghost bumping becomes the first known bumpbot, ran by asukaspammer with "rofl" text. Uses a script to bump threads of interest and reply to one's own post, then delete it.
• 2017-02-08 -
  • 999998 A failed GET that became the fixation of many, many weirdos
  • 1000000 GET!
• 2017-02-10 - Great "/jp/" raid of February 2017
  • Date where a spinoff clique passes an invitation to visit /qa/ through all the /jp/sphere, chiefly involving /ota/, but eventually grows to include most active spinoff sites.
  • This materializes as in the form of spinoff related threads and random bouts of shitposting that last for months, backed by the efforts of the inviting clique that specifically targets meta threads. A number of spinoffers become part of this clique, or simply come to shitpost on occasion.
  • /jp/ heritage shitposts start appearing by hand of the spinoff clique, and the bumpbot makes it's first appearance.
  • On an unrelated note, then 8chan /b/ mod and drawfag fugthelug starts trolling on /qa/.
• 2017-02-11 - Suck My Cock Dude spambot appears, taking several threads to bump limit.
• 2017-02-15 - End of the Icemen - Fake GR1 violation reports start getting banned. An iceman trying to explain their process to "/jp/" gets a public ban. Iceman activities rapidly fall off the site.
• 2017-02-16 -
  • SMCD spam suddenly stops, likely put on autoban.
  • Hiro finally removes Christmas Keksandra from the 4chan homepage and replaces her with Sachiko Koshimizu, after /qa/ reaches out to him on Twitter.
  • Mod spotted in the wild.
• 2017-02-19 - Creative variations of the SMCD bot.
• 2017-02-20 - yotgo makes the infamous "Get Out of /qa/" marisa.
• 2017-02-21 -
  • Imageposting is disabled site-wide. The Happenings thread rediscovers the art of ASCII shitposting.
  • After mounting resistance in the Happenings Thread, the sageru clique compromises and moves to their own general, the Discussion Thread.
• 2017-02-23 - /qa/ gets flooded by black cocks, Elliot Rodgers and the /b/anana, prompting a second bumpbot to appear using the text antispam bump. Future instances utilized custom bump text, self-replying, 3-digit gibberish. Once posted, they are deleted a few minutes later.
• 2017-03-03 - Admin of tonhochan makes an outreach thread.

The board is by all intents and purposes demographically replaced, boards that never saw a soyjak before start getting threads.

• 2021-06-27 - /pnn/ - /pol/ News Network general gets moved to /qa/ from /pol/. The moved thread and all subsequent attempts at new threads are instantly eaten up by soyjaks.
• 2021-08-22 - A soyjak thread featuring a squirrel variant appears. The template gets posted and a few days laters reposted with the text nigga i'm NUTS. It instantly becomes and meme and proceeds to gets spammed everywhere (but mostly the party).
• 2021-09-28 - soyjak posters raid /r9k/
• 2021-10-03 - In what's basically the greatest act of iconoclasm in the history of western imageboards, jaks raid and wipe 1chan off the face of the chanverse. The site is taken down. Days later, it returns cleaned up and with mod-approval posting.
• 2021-11-11 - After countless squirrel jak spam, anon shows /qa/ how to trap and skin a squirrel.
• 2021-11-03 - Death of /qa/ - The exponential growth of /qa/ and unstoppable antics of soyjak posters leads mods to freeze /qa/. Nothing of material value was lost. The emotional value, on the other hand...
  • 09:10 EST - /qa/ raids /lgbt/, displacing over 2/3rds of the catalog.
  • 16:53 EST - /qa/ is frozen, and this time it ain't coming back.
  • Several /qa/ threads pop up site wide in a site-wide Jak raid.
  • Ghostposting in desuarchive and archived moe increases by orders of magnitude.
  • Jaks attempt to colonize /bant/ as a refuge. They are quickly removed, forcing them to move to Soyjak Party.
  • The 4chan Happenings Thread gets remade in /trash/. A new saga begins.

Post-Freezing

• 2021-11-04 - An /a/ meta thread gloats that it can't be moved to /qa/ anymore and it gets moved anyways. And since /qa/ is frozen, nobody can post. It's deleted a few hours later.
• 2021-11-28 - Desumin disables ghostposting on Desuarchive's /qa/ archive.
• 2022-03-19 - A /pw/ meta thread gets moved to /qa/, then deleted.
• 2022-04-01 - A mod makes a... soyjak metathread? It's deleted later.
• 2022-04-25 - A /trash/ thread with a trans catgirl and OP text "/qa/ lost" gets moved to /qa/. Soyteens seethe, then it's deleted. Desumin didn't like it.
• 2022-08-15 - Infamous /trash/ pedophile leto / unicodefag starts harassing /hap/ advertising ecker's ban evasion tool, and later his own fork.
• 2022-08-19 - A brazillian 4chan janitor posts leaks about /j/ on soyjak.party, including screenshots of threads, userscripts made for the janitors, and the Team4chan Discord. Jak teens rush to the Happenings thread to gloat, prompting Leto to have a meltdown and spam the place.
• 2023-04-29 - /qa/doge, avatarfag of Loona from Helluva Boss, arrives to /hap/ via a soyjak raid. Over time his antics entice the many shitposters watching over /hap/ to troll the fuck out of the thread, down to coding a /qa/doge gptbot.
• 2023-12-23 - /qa2/schizo, a frogposting soyteen, begins to raid /hap/, multiple 4chan boards and even other sites.
• 2024-02-03 - a /vip/hap gets made.
• 2024-02-25 - Frog Pond spinoff creates /qa2/, basically giving the schizo his own board.
• 2024-03-16 - Continuous 'ecker, sturdychan and sharty Discord raids, on top of the avatarfag situation, make posting on /trash/hap intolerable. In a kneejerk reaction, a quick plan to move to another board is written. A /hap/ gets made for /bant/, /b/, /trash/, [s4s] and /r9k/ in order to have them compete in a popularity contest. All threads archive fast except for /bant/ and /trash/. avatarfags hoot & holler as they may be moderated there.
• 2024-03-19 - The contest is interrupted by a mod. /trash/hap and /bant/hap are swapped. then the former /bant/hap is moved to /qa/. Next day, /trash/hap goes back to business.
• 2024-04-01 - /qa/ gets an April's Fools sticky. It's also deleted.
• 2024-05-15 - The Frog Pond shuts down and /qa2/ with it.
• 2024-05-19 - haha disregard that i suck cocks

• 2024-06-24 - The situation in /hap/ didn't get better at all. After several attempts at escaping /trash/, /hap/ manages to sustain an /r9k/ thread to bump limit. Avatarfags in /trash/hap refuse to leave, effectively splitting the thread in two. Eventually, most posters would move to /r9k/ and /trash/hap would take the role of the old /nah/.
• 2024-08-15 - it's true. the mac minis. the java. all of it is true.
• 2025-01-13 - The Ribbit Rally closes down and with it dies the last /qa2/ variants.
• 2025-02-05 - /qa2/schizo comes clean on /hap/ and admits to have been behind most (but not all) frog posts on the general. Ending over a year of pointless spam. jkjlkj
• 2025-02-11 - Endless raids cause /r9k/hap to move to /bant/..
