Hello again, sorry I didn't get back to you all yesterday as promised - but I didn't want to move. We had a long day and Kaitlyn was pretty worn out, she fell asleep on me while we were watching TV. I didn't want to wake her up so I could post.

I wont give you all the hour-by-hour - pretty sure you don't want to have to read all that so I'll just hit the highlights. We went to the mall, got her a whole new wardrobe - she said she had a lot of stuff at her old house (she started talking on the way to the mall - not much to begin with but I kept asking her questions and eventually she just started doing the same for me - nothing deep or meaningful really, but I was happy that she'd started talking) but I wasn't sure if we'd ever see that again and even if we did, the clothes she came in were pretty worn so it was probably time for new stuff anyway. I do need to find out how I'd go about getting some of her old stuff though, I'm sure there's things she wants. Anyway, she seemed kind of embarrassed to have me buying things for her - like she'd only pick out one or two things at a time - I'd have to keep telling her she could get more if she wanted.

The underwear shopping was an interesting event, I'm going down the list of things she'd need - clothes, shoes, etc. etc... I finally get to underwear and she instantly turns red. I still don't know what the rules are with these kind of things so I just said "Alright... how about I just give you some money, you go pick out a dozen pairs or so and you can pay for them yourself and meet me back here." She agreed to that pretty quickly - first time she'd left my side I since I picked her up I think. (I'm kind of afraid to let her out of my sight so I just stayed by the entrance to the store and kept on eye on her.)

Oh shit yes.

!!0oHp5yn8MOY Sat 15 May 2010 01:33:31 No.34836937 Report
Also went and had her pick out a bed and some furniture, I only had the one bed in my apartment and she's going to need a room. So we stop for our lunch, or dinner or whatever you want to call eating at 4:30 and then head back home. I got started on clearing out my second bedroom / storage room and Kaitlyn started trying on all her clothes. I just heard her running back and forth a lot - going from the bathroom where she was changing to my room to look in the mirror. When I asked her what she was doing she told me and then started coming to show me every time she tried on something new. The first time she came in she was kind of embarrassed, her face was all flushed (everything seems to embarrass her, I guess she's not really comfortable around me yet - can't blame her, it's only been a few days - I'm kind of on my guard around her too, don't mean to be, it's just a big change having someone around all the time - especially a 12 year old girl) - but by the time she finished she was enjoying herself, even twirling around in her skirts and such. Putting on a little fashion show I guess - didn't bother me any, it was the first time I'd seen her smile - and she picked out some really cute outfits.

So mid-evening, while I have the appartment half torn apart putting away all the stuff that was in her new room and getting it cleaned out, the doorbell rings. And of course, impeccable timing - it's social services. Part of the agreement when I'd taken custody of Kaitlyn was that social services could drop by at will to check up on her. The guy tells me who he is, asks to come in. - Obviously it was kind of hard for him to miss the mess I'd made, but as soon as I explained what I was doing he let out what seemed to be a sigh of relief and went on. !!0oHp5yn8MOY Sat 15 May 2010 01:33:31 No.34836955 Report
It wasn't a long visit really, he asked me a few questions - how was she settling in, did I need anything from social services, any questions, etc. etc. - Then he asked to speak to Kaitlyn privately. - She didn't seem overly thrilled with the idea but I told her I'd be right outside and she agreed. About five minutes later they both come out, the social services guy tells me to calm down (I was nervous, apparently it showed) - everything looks good, said I seemed to be doing a decent job of things. Then he told me he'd be back next week, probably with some more paperwork if things had processed by then - and he was gone.

So we continued on with our day, Kaitlyn helping me clean out the room - called out for Chinese food and settled in for the evening. And that brings us back around to me not wanting to get up to post so I wouldn't wake up Kaitlyn, who had fallen asleep leaning against me.

And I said I wasn't going to give you an hour-by-hour... Sorry, but she's really cute. I think I may be falling in love with her. (No not like that, you know perfectly well what I mean.) I know it's kind of soon to say something like that, I barely even know her... I don't know if it's just an over-protective brother type thing or what, but I can't think of anything I wouldn't do to make her smile. I know I'm still a day behind here but she's passed out and I'm about to be - Saw you all had a lot of questions yesterday that I didn't get a chance to get to, so I'll answer what I can and then I'm going to hit the sack. Unless you all want a day-by-day I'll turn this into a weekly thing though, I know /a/s not my blog - but it seems like you all enjoy hearing about Kaitlyn. I really do appreciate all the advice and the interest you've all taken.

Oh, one question for you all. What kind of things would one buy a 12 year old girl? I can't say I ever really understood kids or women very well... All I could think of was video games along the lines of pokemon and such - any other ideas? She still wont just tell me if there's something she wants, not sure if she's just shy or embarrassed or what - but it looks like for now it's going to be mostly guess work on my part.

She does seem pretty content just to be involved in whatever I'm doing at the moment - but I hardly expect that to last and even if it did I'd still like her to be able to do/have things SHE was interested in.

>>34837222

She did talk about ice skating a little, apparently her friend had a birthday party at an ice rink and she really enjoyed it - had even taken lessons for a little while. I'm gonna take her to a rink near me in the next day or two and maybe sign her up for lessons again if she's interested. Give her a chance to skate more and hopefully hang out with some people her own age. (I'm trying to think of things she'd enjoy doing that would get her out and around people her own age a little - I don't think she'd be as happy living like I do... or did, we'll see.)

Setting the "what to buy" stuff aside...

You will need to start "normalizing" her life and returning everything to normal. She is going through some difficult stuff and maintaining a steady rhythm will help the transition between old life and new.

Also, if you have IRL friends, those you can talk to about "heavy" stuff (and especially if they have children of their own), keep them updated on what is going on with your new life; they can provide you support better than /a/ can. They will also be able to provide immediate information and can help you deal with the incoming emotional trauma you both are/will be going through...

...and (later on) puberty.

The most important thing right now: get her (and you) back into a normal rhythm. This doesn't mean "pretend nothing happened", rather, you both need to move beyond events that you no longer have control over and start focusing on events you CAN control.

I would ask her if there is anything she would like... get her something you both can enjoy together The more time you can spend together, the better... as you are now part of her emotion-system and she will be looking to you for guidance on how to react emotionally to things now.

Now go be the bro we all know you can be!

I'm not sure when the school year ends for the school district you are in, but it is so close to finals and she is under such stress that even if she does end up going for them, she will probably do pretty poorly and have to take summer school anyway.

Repeating the grade is probably the worst idea, given her situation I'm sure the school system would take measures to let her stay in her grade, but I personally think that pushing her to go back to school and finals after such an event might cause some mental damage.

Oh god please don't turn her into that 12 year old with an iPhone. If you get her a cell phone just get one of the free ones. Don't try and make her like you by spending money on her. Just work on being a good dad.

Get her some music from different eras. Justin Bieber and Hannah Montana are very popular with younger kids (I work with kids, thats all we listen to), also get her some 60's music she'll know. I know that if I hear music that I know or have heard somewhere before, I am much more comfortable. Also, get her some anime, of course, something like Cardcaptor Sakura sounds awesome, >>34837122 , and then find a way for her to talk. Communication is what you should worry about after she is fully settled in. It will be very hard to talk to her, she might not like it right now, but she will feel much better talking to someone she lives with than a psychiatrist later in life, and it will be more cost-effective. Find out if the child services has counseling, especially grief and/or just regular counseling, which will help her open up, and the child services here where I live offer it for free or little to no money. Just make sure she feels comfortable. You'll know when she can be in a room by herself. Watch her though, just not like a hawk. Her mom just died, and she might be very depressed. God forbid, she might try to kill herself. I know it sounds off-landish, but it is very true, just watch her mannerisms. there are clues you can look up online, or wherever you wish, and they are pretty much universal. Good Luck, /a/dopter, I couldnt do it. You're a good person

Not necessarily. Adopting a kid is a huge act. Adding a pet into the mix now would not be that much of an impact compared to the Loli.

OP, you should get her a diary (with a lock on it.) It's very private and she has a lot of stuff she's going to be working out, and she'll need a place that she can vent and be herself, seeing as she lost the people closest to her and isn't quite ready to open up to you yet.

Unless it's a betta fish or something ridiculously simple, don't even think about a pet. That shit is far too time-consuming and complicated for this stage in your burgeoning familial relationship.

If it's real, watch new episodes of Heartcatch Precure together with her.

You'd be surprised just how many of us have younger sisters, dipshit.

My youngest sister is around that age, and they definitely have the whole "trying to like what you like to impress you" deal going, which is why she was doing the clothes thing.

Just a bit too young for a cell phone, best not to even think about that for now.

And yeah, the pet idea isn't exactly ideal for the time being. Give her time to adjust to the new home, the new neighbors and the overall new surroundings, then maybe you can reconsider it.

Doing a great thing, dude.

Actually, we did that today. She picked an IPhone, I picked a DROID - didn't have a cellphone previously. - I was asking her about her friends from where she used to live, turns out she had A LOT of them. Asked if she wanted to call them and she did, so I figured I'd get her her own phone so she could call whenever she wanted and I'd get one so she could reach me if she ever needed too (and because I wanted a new toy too.)

>>34837863

You may have a point... She seems to have gotten a lot better really fast - I'm still thinking that's probably going to come crashing down at some point. I doubt she's dealt with all she has to deal with yet... I've not been bringing anything around the subject up unless she initiates the conversation... but she's still shying away from talking to me about anything too personal so I don't know that she would even if it was really bothering her. Really not sure how to approach that to be honest...
